The 125 Shadow simply does not look like a 125, principally because of the fantastic-looking 90, liquid-cooled V-twin at its heart. Allied to its slick 5-speed gearbox the Shadow will cruise with the biggest of them all and not look out of place. It goes superbly and it looks even better because it's got everything that classic cruisers are meant to have like a teardrop fuel tank, a low, well-padded seat and the obligatory lashings of chrome everywhere. Well finished and a stunning looking 125 cruiser

I bought my Shadow second hand (1994 N reg) last year for £2500, and so far I've done about 14000 very comfy miles - no numb-bum syndrome here! This unfortunatly is partly due to the minuscule tanks size - if you can get more than 90 miles from main tank you're doing well, so long haul rides (I regularly rode from East Anglia To North Yorkshire - about 230 miles each way) means many stops for refuelling. It's not the most powerful machine in the world, but as a first big bike (The only other bike I have ridden is a Suzuki Marauder GN125) it's excellent - pleanty of low-end pull, and cheap to insure. However, in anything other than dry conditions it's a bit of a handful - The back wheel likes trying to plot its own course on a wet road. But if you only bike in dry weather, the handling's very good. All in all, if it's your first bike, or you only ride in the dry it's a cracking bike which is very cheap to run and looks fantastic. If you're an all weather biker however, might be best steered clear of.

A very impressive styled cruiser that belies its humble origins and fools onlookers into thinking its a bespoke custom, which is capable and comfortable. This is one cruiser that really stands out from the pack, from it's sturdy raked-out forks to the straight-shooting dual megaphone exhausts. The powerful looks are backed up by the awesome firepower of a V-twin powerplant

Has more presence than any other two-wheeler and never fails to draw a crowd. Only serial poseurs need apply. On the one hand it's an impressive custom bike and on the other, it's a high performance cruiser, Eyes are drawn to the massive chromed flat-six cylinder, 1520cc engine which is fed by six separate carburettors. The engine is tuned to give arm-stretching torque at the mere twist of the throttle. The only problem is too much engine and too much weight

This is one bike you cannot ignore - its imposing looks command your attention. Street-rod styling combines with a massive 1795cc liquid-cooled V-twin engine to intimidate even the strongest of men. But ride, and tame, the VTX and the ultimate cruising bike is yours. Minimalist design gives the VTX its mean yet stylish looks. From the tank mounted chrome instrument panel, to the two-into-one exhaust this is one cool bike. Chrome features include the cylinder head covers, airbox, left crankcase cover and clutch cover. The dragster style seat and semi-swept handlebars with padded handgrips provide a relaxed upright riding position. Combine those with the 17 litre fuel tank (needs a bigger tank+ 5litres) and you can be assured of easy long distance cruising with the VTX. It's fitted with all the latest technology including an electric ignition for easy starting and Honda's combined braking system (CBS) for swift stopping. One of the main features of the new bike is the unique dry-sump oil-cooling system, which positions the oil tank inside the gearbox case. This results in better revs, improved power and allows a lower seat height for that ultra-low riding position

    Review by Kevin Woodfield

    Purchased 1st Sept 2001, Cost £11,000.

Have so far covered 3,300 miles, which includes a tour of Southern Scotland (1,000 miles). Bike is used purely for pleasure/leisure.
Overall performance is good for such a large bike, has so far averaged 42 mpg, has been as high as 47mpg and as low as 37mpg depending on how it's ridden.
Tank capacity is disappointing at only 17 litres (3.7 gal), warning light comes on with about 110 miles on the trip, and must be filled by around 140. The tank could do with being around 4 or 5 litres bigger.
Finish is generally good however some chrome nuts and bolts do have small amounts of surface rust on.
Ground clearance when banking is very disappointing and the hero blobs are starting to wear down, it does catch you out at times on moderate cornering but I'm starting to get used to it and do tend to hang my heel below the peg on cornering so the heel of my boot catches the road before the peg (call it forward warning).
I have replaced the mirrors for those from the CB500 twin, which have longer stems, these are much better, I'm not now looking at my elbows. Cost £60.
I've also replaced the standard black horn for a chrome one however it is mounted in a bad place just in front of your left foot where it picks up all the road crap.
I have had a sissy bar and rack fitted recently which will be very useful for a planned trip to Spain/Portugal in May, I'll report back after the trip. These were ordered back in June 2001 when I first put my deposit on the bike and didn't arrive until February. Cost Nil supplied FOC by Honda because of the delay, fitted FOC by my local dealer Bob Minion of Derby as good will gesture. Two letters of complaint sent to Honda direct and one of thanks when the accessories were supplied FOC.
One recall so far to re-route an earthing cable which apparently was in danger of melting on the exhaust, dealt with quickly and efficiently by Bob Minion.
Tyres have next to no wear on them and should be good for at least 10,000 miles.
A rev counter and clock would be useful for future models.
I am having difficulty purchasing some genuine passenger foot boards (to stop my wife resting her heel on the exhaust). They are available on the American Web Site www.honda.com but Honda have not made them available in the UK and don't intend to. My local dealer is as I write trying to purchase some through the back door from an American dealer. Cost around $300.
I may sound quite critical of the VTX/Honda but these are the facts, the fact is also that I have enjoyed the bike more than any other I've had and would be happy to recommend it. I feel sure some of my criticisms will be ironed out in the VTX's next guise.
