Far-Eastern Cruiser with plenty of style, well finished and
the V-twin engine's a nice change from the usual singles on
this size bike. Well worth a look |
Having
encouraged my husband to return to biking last May and riding
pillion with him, I decided that at the grand old age of 45
I ought to learn to ride myself. So with his encouragement
I did the CBT in October (2003) and set about looking for
a bike. Three weeks later I found my self the proud owner
of a Hyosung Aquila 125cc V-Twin which was only four months
old and cost me under £2000!
I have to say that I am absolutely delighted with it. Despite
the fact that it is quite heavy (for me), it is really easy
to ride and it handles well too, even when doing a turn in
the road with both feet up! It has a lovely light clutch and
a smooth gear box and most importantly a great big comfy seat
for my rather ample rear end!! It's also a very pretty bike
which gets lots of attention whenever I park it, most people
seem to think it's a much bigger bike than it is ( until they
see the L Plates ). So far I havn't had any mechanical problems
with it ( except when I forgot to turn on the fuel tap and
it stopped at the end of the road. Very embarrassing). The
only real problem I have is keeping my husband's hands of
it,as he has a 54 year old BSA which is a lovely bike but
not not really suitable for riding in the winter. I am looking
forward to the better weather when we can cruise through the
New Forest together and to passing my test and I have no regrets
about buying a bike that most people have never heard of as
it suits me perfectly. Yours Cathy Swanson. |

people bought this this little cruiser last year - that's
more than the SP-1 or Fazer 1000. The list price is £2110,
but clothing giant J&S Accessories has been importing
the bike for £1399 otr - which probably explains some
of its success. That's less money than most 50cc scooters
for a well-made, full size bike. Powered by a four-valve single-cylinder
engine, the cruiser is brisk enough for urban fun and cheaper
to run than a two-stroke scooter. The engine is smooth, but
desperately needs a sixth gear if you ride on a dual carriageway.
Flat out at 65mph, you're up against the 10,000rpm redline.
The chassis is low, light and well balanced. The cruiser was
more sure-footed on its full-size wheels than any scooter,
while the brakes and suspension were a match for Peterborough's
pot holes. Enthusiastic cornering finds the limits of the,
erm Golden Boy tyres (it was February). The mirrors work,
lights are brighter than most 125s, there's an electric and
kick start, comfy seat, pillion back rest and a tool ki. The
only thing missing is a sidestand.

Bought
this bike - my very first - at the ripe old age of 35!!
have thoroughly enjoyed learning on it, it's comfy and seems
sure footed when cornering (unless you push it too far over
- ahem!). Great fun around town and costs buttons to run/own.
Easy to service and repair.
Ideal learners bike and it looks great too - Harleyesque
I've been told by the young ladies who frequent the local
Video Drive In!! I'd recommend it to anyone just setting
out - especially through the great deal that J+S were doing.

I have been riding my Cruise II for 6 months now, having
bought it for £1,450 from J&S. Costs nothing to
run and always works! It has caried me well along the A roads,
Bristol to Birmingham and back in reasonable comfort. I like
the headlamps, which are actually bright, unlike the horrible
2 stroke Kawasaki i replaced with this bike. Stops well, goes
well enough and i cant argue with 100 mpg. Keep on top of
the finish with regular cleaning and it will keep looking
good.
Top tip: Throw away the Korean indicator relay (the
round thing under the right hand of the saddle, behind the
plastic panel) and replace it with a nippendenso flasher unit-just
make sure it is a 12v unit. This solves an intermittent indicator
fault, as the stock relay is not very good. |

Subject: Hyosung Cruise II 125
My better half, Georgy, had been itching to get
out on the road on two wheels for ages. She did her CBT in
February and wanted a bike desperately. Flicking through the
bike mags I noticed the ad "Get cruising for only £1400".
It was the Cruise II, and at that price I was on the phone
like a shot (I had seen a year old Cruise II in my local showroom
for £1800).
The bike
was delivered and the cruisin' began. I got hold of a 1994
Honda CG125 and we hit the roads together. The Hyosung handles
fairly well and certainly knocks the Honda for six in the
acceleration and top speed stakes. We live near Buxton in
the Peak District so we are out on the bikes nearly every
day, doing our mini version of touring. We have parked up
in Matlock Bath a few times and the Hyosung gets many admiring
glances. It definitely looks bigger than a 125.
Georgy
uses her Hyosung for commuting into Manchester every day,
a round trip of 50 miles. I do an oil change every 1500 km
or so, and change the filter every 3000. The engine has never
missed a beat. The only problems we have had were a broken
speedo cable driver and occasionally the left hand light switch
cluster seems a little temperamental. The indicators and dipped
beam have decided not to work a couple of times. They just
seem to correct themselves. Aside from the little problems
the bike rides and runs brilliantly. Georgy tells me it is
very comfortable (after the CG, I find the seating position
a little strange, possibly too laid back for me).
The bike
is kept outside in all weathers. It gets covered up at night
if it looks like rain. Even though it has the abuse the British
weather can throw at it, only the wing mirrors have shown
any sign of corrosion. Well impressed ! Georgy does clean
and polish it when she can though.
In summary,
a great first bike and a very tough work horse that can take
a lot of punishment. Keep the chain well adjusted though,
I'm off to J & S to buy some sprockets . . .
